Program notes

Stille Nacht (Silent Night) (1992)

Stille Nacht (Silent Night) is an arrangement of the well-known and much-loved nineteenth century Austrian Christmas carol by Franz Xaver Gruber. My arrangement expands and develops the original; almost, as a friend said when he heard it, a ‘mini tone poem’. My version was composed for the Australian Youth Orchestra’s Tall Poppies Compact Disc of Christmas carols arranged by Australian composers in April 1992. The piece is about 7 minutes in duration and tries to capture the rapturous and reverent mood of children anticipating the thrill and hushed magic of Christmas.
