Quintet for clarinet and strings, opus 83 (2010)

1. Turbulent, dramatic, with drive

2. Intermezzo – always graceful

3. Calm, resolute, expressive

4. Fast and snappy

Quintet for clarinet and strings was composed at Point Piper House in Sydney in the summer of 2009-10. The large-scale work was commissioned by the Music Board of the Australia Council with the aid of a two year Fellowship. The work is about 30 minutes in duration and was written for the brilliant Brisbane clarinettist Paul Dean and the Australian String Quartet. They gave the work its first performance at the Bangalow Festival in August 2010 on the composer’s 50th birthday.

The sequence of the work’s four movements contrast the drama, virtuosity and rhythmic drive of the first and last movements with the gentle and expressive lyricism of the second and the slowly-building intensity of the third.
