Sonata sopra ‘Sancta Maria ora pro nobis’ (Monteverdi arr. Schultz) (1994)

This work is a transcription of Monteverdi’s music of the same name – a movement taken from his large work, the Vespers of 1610. It was arranged by Schultz to commence a concert of Schultz’s music given by The Seymour Group at the Eugene Goossens Hall, ABC Sydney, in July 1994.

Schultz comments that, “the original music is one of Monteverdi’s most beautiful and transparent vocal works scored for soprano and orchestra with the simple, refrain-like text consisting solely of “Sancta Maria ora por nobis” (‘Holy Mary, pray for us’ in English). This arrangement aims to capture the lithe joyousness of the original.”

It is scored for soprano voice, 2 flutes, clarinet, bass clarinet, marimba and cello and can be performed as a companion piece to Schultz’s sextet called Silk Canons.
